The Crown Jewel of Composting in Northeastern Wisconsin
In May of 2022, after having operated out of our Founder’s backyard for only about eight months, Greener Bay Compost acquired a nearly-seven-acre, agriculturally-zoned property approximately 20 miles west of the City of Green Bay, with the intention of converting the property, which was formerly used for row-cropping, into a food-waste-focused, commercial compost facility.

Since that time, we have invested heavily into both infrastructure and equipment (including several tractors, a pair of homemade compost screeners, a homemade compost bagger, a compost storage facility, a bucket screening and cleaning facility, and a world-class compost pad, specifically designed with food waste composting in mind), to create what is currently the only facility of its kind in Northeastern Wisconsin.

Our facility currently processes over a ton of food waste each week, which we collect from both residential households and businesses/organizations in the Green Bay and Appleton areas, through our Award-Winning Residential and Commercial Compost Pickup Services.

Because we accept not only common compostables, such as fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, and egg shells, but other materials the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) does not recommend composting at home as well, including, but not limited to, cooked and cured meats, soft and solid dairy (cheese, yogurt, etc.), bones, and leftovers, our facility is able to handle a much wider variety of materials than most compost facilities.

This includes certified compostable products (as long as they are clearly and individually labeled as BPI, TUV, and/or Compost Manufacturing Alliance certified compostable, as per our List of Acceptable and Not Acceptable Materials for Composting), which only about 40% of our fellow compost facilities accept.

Because of this, our small, but mighty, family-run operation has been able to divert (as of June 2025) approximately 320,000 pounds (160 tons) of organics from our local landfills, preventing massive amounts of methane from being released into our environment, saving countless taxpayer dollars on trash hauling and disposal, and delaying the need for our area to build yet another landfill (at great expense to everyone in Brown, Outagamie, and Winnebago Counties) in the process.

Over the course of approximately four to six months, and via what is known as our “hot composting” process, we upcycle all of the organics we accept into a nutrient-rich, contaminant-free soil amendment, known as compost, which we sell year-round at www.GBCompost.com/Compost, in both 1/4″ Screened and Unscreened versions, for use by local gardeners, farmers, and plant lovers.

And the best part? We’re just getting started!
